Lord Mahavir’s Extraordinary Equanimity: The Story of Sangam Dev’s Upsarg
Lord Mahavir’s power and strength to overcome karmas were unparalleled. This supreme ability earned Him the name “Mahavir,” meaning the “most courageous.” Let us delve into the inspiring story behind this title.
The Naming of Mahavir
One day, Mahavir Swami was meditating in a serene garden. His deep absorption and unwavering focus in meditation impressed the celestial gods. Indra Dev, the king of the gods, exclaimed, “You are truly great, Prabhu Vardhaman! Today, none in the three worlds can disturb Your meditation. You are unmatched in bravery, serenity, and equanimity. You are Mahavir!”
The other celestial gods present unanimously agreed with Indra Dev’s proclamation, finding the title “Mahavir” apt for the Lord.
Sangam Dev’s Envy and Challenge
While the celestial assembly admired Mahavir Swami, one celestial being, Sangam Dev, grew envious. Unable to tolerate the praise, he challenged the title bestowed upon the Lord.
“If Indra Dev does not interfere,” Sangam declared, “I will break Mahavir’s meditation and prove you all wrong.” Indra Dev, though reluctant, remained silent.
Mistaking this silence for consent, Sangam Dev unleashed a series of brutal trials upon Lord Mahavir. Over six long months, he inflicted twenty fatal tortures, known as “upsarg,” in an attempt to break the Lord’s meditation.
The Trials Inflicted by Sangam Dev
- Sandstorm: Sangam Dev buried Lord Mahavir under a massive heap of sand, cutting off His ability to breathe. Yet, the Lord remained undisturbed.
- Swarm of Ants: A swarm of ants pricked the Lord’s body, but He continued His meditation with unwavering focus.
- Mosquito Attack: Countless mosquitoes stung Him, causing His body to bleed profusely. Yet, He faced the pain with complete equanimity.
- Termite Hill: Sangam Dev sent an army of white ants that turned the Lord’s body into a termite hill. Still, Mahavir’s meditation remained steadfast.
- Black Scorpions: Poisonous scorpions crawled over His body, piercing it with their stings. The Lord did not waver.
- Mongooses with Sharp Teeth: Sangam Dev unleashed mongooses that tore apart the Lord’s flesh. Yet, He stayed unshaken.
- Cobra Assault: Large cobras slapped their tails against the Lord and bit Him severely. Even this did not disrupt His meditation.
- Giant Rats: Field rats gnawed at the Lord’s body with their sharp teeth, but He remained in perfect equanimity.
- Elephant’s Fury: A elephant pierced His chest with its tusks, tossed Him into the air, and trampled Him. Yet, the Lord’s resolve stayed unbroken.
- Ominous Ghost: A terrifying ghost tried to frighten the Lord, but He remained unmoved.
- Tigers’ Attack: Ferocious tigers gored Him with their claws, but Mahavir Swami’s focus did not falter.
- Spoiled Food: Sangam Dev ruined the Lord’s food and deprived Him of nourishment. Even hunger could not distract the Lord.
- Illusions of Parents: Sangam Dev created an illusion of Lord Mahavir’s parents crying in pain. However, the Lord saw through the deceit and remained steady.
- Fire Between His Feet: Sangam Dev lit a fire between the Lord’s feet and cooked rice. The flames burned His body, yet His meditation continued uninterrupted.
- Bird-Catcher’s Cages: Sangam Dev hung cages filled with birds on the Lord’s body. The birds pecked at His flesh, yet He remained undisturbed.
- Storms and Hailstorms: Sangam Dev unleashed violent storms and hail. The Lord stood still amidst the chaos.
- Iron Chakras: Giant iron chakras were hurled at Him, but they failed to disturb His focus.
- Heavy Mace: A massive mace buried the Lord up to His knees in the ground. Yet, His meditation remained unshaken.
- Lustful Temptations: Sangam Dev created an illusion of sparsely clad fairies. However, Lord Mahavir, rooted in His Self, remained unmoved.
The Triumph of Equanimity
For six long months, Sangam Dev tried every possible tactic to disrupt Lord Mahavir’s meditation. Despite enduring unimaginable tortures, the Lord remained perfectly equanimous. His focus was entirely on finishing His karmic account and attaining Keval-Gnan (omniscience).
Realizing his failure, Sangam Dev finally surrendered. Filled with shame and repentance, he sought forgiveness from Lord Mahavir. Out of sheer compassion, tears rolled down the Lord’s cheeks, signifying His boundless love and forgiveness even for his tormentor.
